This is located on the westernmost tip of Sulcis and is the ferry port for the island of San Pietro. This fishing village grew up in the 17th c. when a tonnara (building used as a base for tuna fishing) was built on the site. Uncontrolled building work has ravaged the appearance of the old town centre since 1971, when industries moved into nearby Porto Vesme. The tourist town of Portopaleddu has grown up in recent years to the north of the town.
